defend everybody guard knows secret
We've got to defend and guard the perimeter. There's no secret there. Everybody knows that.
great guard guys hard nine playing step team tone
Carl set the tone with his nine assists. That makes us hard to guard when he's playing like that. It was a great team effort. We had a lot of guys step up.
bigger certain guards guys last number played players programs smaller three
We've always played three guards in certain instances over the years. A number of programs do that. Oftentimes, your smaller players are your better players. Last year, our bigger guys were our better players.
across bigger guards start taller
They're athletic. Their guards are bigger than our guards. They start a very big lineup. If you put them all across the board, they probably are taller than us.
below dangerous good guards job keeping shut
You're not going to shut him down. He's going to get shots. He's going to take shots. He's got range. We've done a good job on a lot of guards this year, keeping them below their averages. You can't let him get going. He's been very dangerous this year.
anxious battle calmed clock defense good great hard job last played ranked running rushed shots size tested towards win
This was a great win for us. I think we were anxious at first and rushed a bit. But we calmed down and played a great last 30 minutes. They're a very good team, ranked 19th in the RPI, so they're battle tested and very well coached. Their size and versatility make them hard to play against. I thought we did a good job offensively, especially running the clock at the end and getting great shots towards the end of possessions. Our defense still has a long way to go though.
We've just got to keep doing the things that we're doing and keep getting better.
guy knew might pass
We knew that he might not get the assist, but he would probably pass it to the guy who would set it up.
knew
We knew it would come down to the end.
against best compete guys people practice prove
We're not really out to prove anything to people. We play to compete. These guys like to play against the best people and they like challenges. They compete here in practice and it doesn't really change.
ability near progress
We're not near where we need to be defensively. We need to make significant progress there, but we have the ability to do it.
battle sets win
To be successful, we need to win the battle of the boards. It sets up everything we do.
areas beginning exhibition games improve improved maybe team year
This team has improved from the beginning of the year more than any team I've been around. From the exhibition games through the 14 (regular-season) games, they've improved tremendously. But we have a lot of areas we can improve in. Maybe that's because of our youth.
against battle came continued east game good ncaa physical shooting team
This was a tough, physical Big East game against a team who I think will be good enough to go to the NCAA Tournament. Our shooting wasn't great, but Marquette had a lot to do with that, so we continued to battle and came away with a big win.
