buyers expect pay price
You have to be a competitive seller. You can't just put a price on something and expect buyers to pay that price anymore.
form knowing medium musicals people realizing
You have to understand the medium you're writing for. People jump into writing musicals without realizing how complicated they are. Knowing one form doesn't necessarily mean you know the other. You have to be comfortable with it.
entertainment
Moral passion without entertainment is propaganda, and entertainment without moral passion is television.
best life mean next
I have no idea what will come next in my writing life or life in general. I like not knowing, but I know what I want. That doesn't mean it will happen, but I'll give it my best try.
assess great literary social work
I don't think you can ever assess your work. I don't think Turgenev could assess his any more than I can assess mine, and his didn't have a social impact as much as great literary impact.
best great people theatre wonderful work

When I started out, I wanted to be Billy Joel. The plan was to be a singer-songwriter of that ilk, and, then, I got waylaid - that's probably an unfair way to say it - from being a rock star by the musical theatre stuff, which I love doing.
recorded recording stations studios
When I started in '54, it was only one track on a quarter-inch machine. We didn't have recording studios much around the country; we went into the radio stations and recorded our records.
best capital listen love musician musicians
Being a musician - and I like to think of myself as a musician with a capital M - you need to be an omnivore, and I think the best musicians will listen to anything and love everything, and I do.
begging family musical realized
I don't come from a musical family at all, but I realized early on I was a musician. I started begging for a piano when I was 6 years old.
bit surprised
Personally, I've never been popular, so I'm not surprised that professionally I'm a bit out of step, too.
I would have to say I've been on the 'Opry' at least 30-35-40 times a year for... 51-52 years.
