You must cross over the vast open ocean, but you cannot cross over to the other side.

You may observe the thirty fasts, and say the five prayers each day, but 'Satan' can undo them. Says Nanak, you will have to walk on the Path of Death, so why do you bother to collect wealth and property?

You play like a child, craving sweets; moment by moment, you become more entangled in emotional attachment.
continue cultivate desire reality recognize sexual ultimate
They do not recognize the ultimate reality, that we all must go; they continue to cultivate the poisons of sexual desire and anger.
above banker commodity deal
There is one store, and one banker above all; the merchants deal in the one commodity
attuned obtain shall true truth
Attuned to Truth, you shall obtain the True One.
cannot lord obtained unseen
The Unseen and Inscrutable Lord is permeating and pervading everywhere. He cannot be obtained by any effort.
attachment emotional fall false love shall
This emotional attachment to Maya shall not go with you; it is false to fall in love with it.

After cutting away its branches, its feet are bound together into bundles, and then, it is placed between the wooden rollers and crushed. What punishment is inflicted upon it! Its juice is extracted and placed in the cauldron; as it is heated, it groans and cries out. And then, the crushed cane is collected and burnt in the fire below. Nanak, come, people, and see how the sweet sugar-cane is treated!

After bathing, the Muslims recite their prayers, and after bathing, the Hindus perform their worship services.
pleases serve stand task true worthless
Some stand and serve You; without the Name, nothing else pleases them. Any other task would be worthless to them - You have enjoined them to Your True Service.

Some speak and expound, and while speaking and lecturing, they pass away.
lord melodies minds sing songs
Some sing songs and melodies and hymns, but their minds do not sing of the Lord
joys pains pass utter
Now my joys are few, and my pains are many. In utter agony, I pass my life.
