We've just been very fortunate we had good success against him and made good pitches on him, ... You have to contain him. You don't just totally shut him down.
We're not mathematically eliminated, ... But we're in a pretty good hole right now. . . . We still have a chance, and we still keep battling until somebody tells us, 'You're out of it.'
You have good results when you have good at-bats. And we had a lot of good at-bats tonight. Everybody chipped in.
What's deceptive about a good changeup as far as a hitter's concerned is the arm motion. If he delivers it with the same arm motion and same arm speed that he does the fastball, it will be a very effective pitch for him.
You have to understand, number one, the guys that are out there, those people are not going to be out there. We didn't catch the ball in the wind, we didn't make good decisions on plays, we didn't execute fundamentally.
You feel especially good inside when the kids go out there and do a job for you. This team is probably going to have a different face on it by the time we see it next year opening day.
We didn't make good pitches in this series, especially tonight.
Brooks never impressed me because you were accustomed to him making the plays. This kid reminds me a lot of Brooks on those plays. Brooks owned those things. Brooks was very good on those slow rollers coming in.
Mechanically, he looked OK out there on the mound. All in all it was a good outing.
Nobody is going to win a job today, tomorrow or the first week of Spring Training. So everybody settle down and do what you are capable of doing. Get yourself ready for the long haul. Mostly everybody in that room doesn't have a real good chance to make that club. There are just too many people in there.
It all comes from the pitching. If you have good pitching, it keeps you in ballgames.
I thought overall it was a very good year. We had a good first half and a terrible second half. In spring training, if you asked people what would you be happy with, I think they would have said they would be happy with a .500 record.
I think that would be something that would get our attention for the future at least. Why not? That's the only way you are going to be able to look up in the shoulder or the elbow itself, have a pretty good idea of what's in there.
I think you have to ... take an MRI on every pitcher that you acquire in a trade or free agency - the elbows, knees and shoulders. That's the only way you're going to be able to look at the elbow and shoulder and knees, and get a pretty good idea of what's in there.
