beneficial break clubs concern factors injuries issue north number season trying whether
There are a number of factors - how long of a break, and whether that break is beneficial to the season we're trying to have in North America. Injuries are also an issue and a concern of our clubs and our players.
break challenge concern deal decisions difference experience injuries issue issues led location longer number obviously olympics otherwise players plays time whether
Obviously injuries are an issue and a concern of our clubs. Location of the Olympics plays into that, the significant time difference we had in Nagano (for the '98 Games) was a challenge and it led into a longer break than we would have otherwise liked. There are a number of issues that you deal with as you make these decisions each time around, and probably the most significant is our experience here and whether players are getting hurt.
alleged betting football issue judgment justifies monitor otherwise pervasive poor seriously sports
While betting on football or other sports may be the pervasive issue, it in no way justifies poor judgment or otherwise alleged inappropriate conduct. We will take this issue very seriously and will monitor the proceedings closely.
agreement arms believe facing issues needs optimistic proper remain resolve respect side suggest types understanding work
I remain optimistic for two reasons. One is it's not as if we haven't done anything to date. We have done a lot of the work that needs to be done in these types of negotiations. I also believe there is an understanding on the other side with respect to the issues that are facing the game. The only thing we need to get our arms around and come to an agreement on, and I'm not going to suggest it's insignificant, is what's the proper way to resolve these issues.
clubs concern injuries issue
Injuries are also an issue and a concern of our clubs and our players.
bargaining collective continued dialogue early healthy issues meeting next progress relating resume
There was healthy dialogue and progress continued to be made on many operational issues relating to a new collective bargaining agreement. We will resume meeting early next week.
ability benefit cushion exception healthy injuries injury issue nights suit teams time type
Teams from time to time under every CBA we've ever had have had nights where they couldn't suit 20 healthy players, ... There's still enough flexibility as you make appropriate assignments and recalls. There is the benefit of the long-term injury exception and teams get the benefit of that and cushion of that. But injuries are more significant under this type of system. So far, we have not experienced an issue with teams not having the ability to make call-ups.
agree existed fairly further giving issue mandatory matter opportunity players resistance season seemed serious step union vet
The union seemed amenable to giving the matter serious consideration, but indicated that there still existed fairly significant resistance from their membership. They wanted the opportunity to use this season to further vet the issue with their players before they would agree to take the step of implementing a mandatory visor rule.
attention betting brought concern enormous evidence games integrity jersey safely
We would have enormous concern about any betting on NHL games, but I can safely say there is no evidence brought to our attention in conversations with the prosecutors and the New Jersey police. There is no evidence the integrity of any NHL games was at stake.
finding firm irrelevant retention
This retention wasn't about making a 'politically correct' or 'politically acceptable' choice. It was about getting the right person for the job. Firm affiliation is irrelevant to finding the right person.
committed future health necessary objective viability
We are very committed to an objective, and we think that objective is necessary for the long-term future and viability and health of this sport.
bargaining clear collective concerned deal engaged ensure frustrated interest leadership power resolved save start timely union
We are very frustrated and concerned over where we are in this process. The union is engaged in a charade. It is clear to us that union leadership has no interest in negotiating or making a deal to save the start of the season. Union leadership is stalling, doing everything in its power to ensure this collective bargaining negotiation is not resolved in a timely manner.
certainly decision indicate league legal necessary protect stand supports whatever
At some point, I think it's important to take a stand and indicate a willingness to do whatever is necessary to protect your contractual and legal rights. The league certainly supports Washington's decision to do that here.
fair point
At this point I think that's probably a fair assessment.
