You've got to run your career. What happens is a lot of times artists have this talent and they're just looking for somebody to take it and do something with it. And you have to be the creative force.
We think it hugely important to support young artists, there is a war against that kind of artistry, that kind of creation...When somebody is 19 years old, they're gonna do what they're gonna do just like we did... For me the most important thing was for him to know anytime he can call and I'll come whatever happens.
Increasingly, to dismiss any popular artistic style is seen as the worst kind of snobbery. And snobbery, it goes without saying, is unacceptable in a diverse and democratic world.
Everyone likes to hear that their eccentricities and their addictions are simply evidence of their sensitive artistic nature.
Folk music is really great music because it?s real life, it tells real stories. These are New Hampshire stories that we?re going to hear. The question is, 'what do we do?' as there is a view which says that anything artistic should not be censored because it is a creative expression, etc. But if it is having that kind of negative impact on our young people, that is something that we are fighting against, the violence and the aggression, then we have to do something about it. And my view is that these things should be censored, banned from the airwaves and the electronic media. I have no qualms about it.
The greatness of an artist or a writer does not depend on what he has in common with other artists and writers, but on what he has peculiar to himself.
We decided to consolidate every single programming dollar into three days instead of four for maximum impact. We're trying to achieve a virtual explosion of artistry in the three-day weekend so we can give our audience an amazing experience.
Khairani Barokka is a writer, spoken-word poet, visual artist and performer whose work has a strong vein of activism, particularly around disability, but also how this intersects with, for example, issues of gender - she's campaigned for reproductive rights in her native Indonesian, and is currently studying for a PhD in disability and visual cultures at Goldsmiths. She's written a feminist, environmentalist, anti-colonialist narrative poem, with tactile artwork and a Braille translation. How could I not publish that?
