church needs culture
I come from a culture that embodies the need to convert others to "the truth." The Mormon Church has one of the largest missionary programs in the world. That does not interest me.
mother daughter opportunity
A mother and daughter are an edge. Edges are ecotones, transitional zones, places of danger or opportunity. House-dwelling tension. When I stand on the edge of the land and sea, I feel this tension, this fluid line of transition. High tide. Low tide. It is the sea's reach and retreat that reminds me we have been human for only a very short time.
cutting glasses vision
Shards of glass can cut and wound or magnify a vision.
opportunity differences opinion
Most of all, differences of opinion are opportunities for learning.
conversation vehicle
CONVERSATION is the vehicle for change.
voice listening heard
Each voice is distinct and has something to say. Each voice deserves to be heard. But it requires the act of listening.
heart path vulnerable
The heart is the path to wisdom because it dares to be vulnerable in the presence of power
sacred way stories
Story is a sacred visualization, a way of echoing experience.
rivers climate movement
The climate change movement is a river overflowing seeping into every nook and cranny.
country wings ideas
Our correspondences have wings - paper birds that fly from my house to yours - flocks of ideas crisscrossing the country. Once opened, a connection is made. We are not alone in the world.
flower locks done
The only thing I have done religiously in my life is keep a journal. I have hundreds of them, filled with feathers, flowers, photographs, and words - without locks, open on my shelves.
never-trust macabre descent
A trip to the hospital is always a descent into the macabre. I have never trusted a place with shiny floors.
danger exploits
The danger is in what we codify, commodify, and exploit.
powerful mean thinking
I think we have powerful role-models among us in the American West. Certainly the Hopis, a timeless civilization that understands sustainability and what that means about living in harmony, in tandem with the natural world. We have much to learn from them, and they will survive us, I feel certain about that.
