break great literary mean
I always say, and I mean it, that the great break of my literary career was when I went to law school.
baby confusing dad died haunted home sister three time weird
My sister was a twin, and the other baby died in childbirth, and I was three at the time, and I always kind of thought it haunted me. It was a weird thing. My dad was an ob-gyn, and so it was confusing that the other baby didn't come home from the hospital.
either existed fiction literary plain popular view
My view is that popular fiction as it existed was just plain dumb, and literary fiction was either abstruse, or unbelievably boring.
amazing basically believe book books both format goes good incredibly longer visual
I really believe that the movie will never be as good as the book, both because the book goes on longer - a movie is basically an abridgment of a book - and because books are internal. But they are incredibly powerful. The visual format is, you know, amazing.
boundaries criterion fiction heart hitch imagined
I read little nonfiction, but I have no boundaries about the fiction I relish. The only unfailing criterion is that I can hitch my heart to the imagined world and read on.
afternoon early lunch
By lunch or early afternoon I'm pretty much done for the day as a writer.
citizen city entire fall individual large life lives love rise small town watching
Being a lawyer, even in a city as large as Chicago, is like being a citizen of a small town. I love watching the life of the town play out. You know, the rise and fall of individual lives in the entire community is just fascinating to me.
almost criminal practise work
I practise law almost every day. Exclusively criminal work these days.
american-novelist fiction reduced single
If life's lessons could be reduced to single sentences, there would be no need for fiction.
anybody family felt free good life love pictures sacrifice talk
I never really felt free to talk a lot about my family life because I don't want to sacrifice anybody else's privacy. If you look through the archives, you will see, for example, no pictures of my children. That is not because I don't love them. I think I've been a really good dad; at least, I try to be.
begins books books-and-reading character
In each of my books a character begins to take over.
began celebrate diversity sixties wake
In the wake of the Sixties they began to celebrate diversity and pluralism.
amazed book couple extra four interested loops plot sort struck time
In re-reading 'Presumed Innocent,' the one thing that struck me - and I re-read the book four different times in writing 'Innocent,' interested in different things each time - but I did think there were a couple of extra loops in the plot that I probably didn't need. The other thing that sort of amazed me was how discursive the book was.
certain extremely humanity people shaping sixties
For people like me, people of a certain privilege, the sixties were extremely important in shaping our sense of humanity.
