We were passing through Hattiesburg, Miss. when we really started to see a lot of damage. It was pretty torn up, with power lines down everywhere.

While we were out working we were called and asked if we wanted to go down there and work on a volunteer basis. They told us to go home and get our stuff and come back.

We were getting the lines cleared and getting them back up but we still couldn't make anything hot.

Most of these guys are former athletes and it really was like a competition, to get things working again. I was the foreman on that job, but I didn't have to lead anyone -- those guys really went after it down there.
bought cakes came community cook cooked dark house kicked last
We came in after dark after working that last night, and the whole community showed up at that house to cook for us. They cooked us cakes and jambalaya -- the whole community kicked in and bought everything.
city people stay staying tent time workers
They had a tent city set up for the workers to stay in, and there were probably about 100 there that first night. But by the time we left, there were probably 500 people staying there.
