I decided at 15 that I didn't want to be one of those artists that gets up and sings love songs they don't mean. I decided that I was going to be me to the fullest extent, that my songs were going to reflect relationships I've had, things I've been through, and even the stuff I'm embarrassed about.
I can turn heartbreak into songs that help other people
You have all these song titles and song time, and you put it in a certain order, and you slap a cover on it. That's a record. That's how I've seen all my records.
The music usually occurs to me as a complete sound, and then I have developed the skill of being able to translate that into a fully realized song.
As soon as you start to think of that thing that you want to convey or say, you can always just say it much better than you can actually rhyme it or stuff it into a song. It's very, very difficult to just kind of get your point across without going the back way. And you have to be good at that, to not think about things so hard. Let the pen take over, so that it's somebody else's job to dissect the lyrics and tell you what you're all about.
I hate not understanding the words, because it kind of squashes the song. It shrinks the visual landscape that you've made for the sounds. And, all of a sudden, the content eclipses things.
I never see songs as permanent. I'm always in a state of revising everything.
For me, there is only love and fear.
I always wrote poetry as a teenager and it was always so dark, but it made me feel good to get it out.
I read all the time. I love it. My fantasy would be to be locked into a library. I'd be very, very happy.
I wanted to do it my way with my career, and I had this arrogant notion that people weren't just interested in my music but me as a person. That was my bit of arrogance, I guess. That's something I learned from Madonna. I was a fan right from the first time I heard 'Holiday.'
I was brought up to question authority, and thank God for that.
My mom took all of my behavior personally. Everything I did, she thought it was an act of rebellion against her. But it was just me being me.
Having a child is the best thing that could happen.
