I don't reject the concept of preemptive war. I'm a mother of five. I have five grandchildren. And I always say: Think of a lioness. Think of a mother bear. You come anywhere near our cubs, you're dead. And so, in terms of any threat to our country, people have to know we'll be there to preemptively strike. But what the president [Bush] did was, on the basis of no real intelligence for an imminent threat to our country, chose to go into a war for reasons that are still unknown to us.
I'm Nancy Pelosi, but my grandchildren call me Mimi. For me, politics is an extension of my role as a mother and a grandmother. For the Democratic women of the House, our work is not about the next election, but rather the next generation.
I think about my parents all the time, especially on Sunday when I'm at Mass. My mother always said, 'We do not pray to win elections. We pray for people's health, we pray that God's will be done, we pray that we do our best. But we do not pray to win elections.'
Did I ever tell my constituents that if they liked their plan they could keep it? I would have if I ever met anybody who liked his or her plan, but that was not my experience, that was not my experience. And it was not my experience as a mother of five, who occasionally has a bad back and the rest of that. I was considered a poor risk, even though I had some resources and thought I was quite strong for having five children. But the insurance company didn't see it that way.
The federal budget should be a statement of our national values. Sadly, the Republican budget fails that test.
It's clear that the elections in California , Virginia, New Jersey and across the country were a rejection of the misplaced priorities of the Republicans in Washington, D.C. ,
It was a bill that was anti-family, anti-taxpayer, and anti-American.
The message from this budget is, not only is the federal government not going to be there for you, it's going to make matters worse for you and use you as an excuse to give tax cuts to the wealthiest.
They'll take food out of the mouths of children in order to give tax cuts to the wealthiest.
This isn't about whether you want to protect the American people or not, this is about whether you want to obey the law.
This isn't about small government. This is about small-minded, petty government that does not meet the needs of the American people.
Port security under the Bush administration is full of holes.
I feel very confident about where we are.
I feel sad for him today, and for his family. But I even feel sadder for the American people, who have had their lives affected by the culture of cronyism and corruption that exists in Washington.
