I think that talking about the personal specificity, personal details, is how you get the big, big audiences - by talking about your relationships or your personal tragedies. If you reach out with that energy, you'll touch people.
I've always known that I love directing but I was really aware of it while making 'Beginners.' I am my happiest when I'm on set directing. I am also my kindest. When the actors get in front of the camera, it makes them very vulnerable. I am so in love with them for trying so hard.
A lot of people think they can't help directly with the Hurricane Katrina, but if you come out to 'Burgers at the Beach' Thursday night, you can.
This is not communism here. In my opinion they add value to my property.

I think Elliott's songs and The Spree's songs complement each other both chord and tone-wise, as well as with the goals of their music. He came through the door and he was really nervous, which again made me excited because, OK, this isn't someone who is professional and wearing a mask and being slick and all that. His first take was horrible, and I was totally crestfallen. I told him to stop acting, and he nailed it. It was a sort of 'meant to be' type of thing.
I relate to Lou a lot, ... We're both sensitive boys who think too much. Sensitive straight boys who think too much. We're kind of caught in the middle.
I had to find a young person who was willing to show his fear in a way that's not fake. The character is very vulnerable and exposed. When Lou came in, he had this nervousness that he didn't try to hide. He was a real kid - but he was also an amazing actor.
I felt someone was revealing hard truths about themselves, revealing uneasy things about themselves, which I always find really generous, ... It makes my life easier when people say, 'Hey! I'm not perfect,' or, 'Hey! I've got flaws.' And he did it with such a sense of humor and such compassion for all those flaws, he was making us all a cushion to trip over and fall on, you know?
I feel like kids are the perfect psychic investigators of their parents, and kids understand their parents' unconscious better than the parents ever do.
This hotel has been a part of the social fabric of Port Huron for 108 years, ... I think it just adds to it.
Over and over again, I'm trying to express or communicate these big and small struggles to the world, and really to myself.
