I probably should have stepped down a little earlier. I felt it. Our guys' minds were just gone. What you have to understand is that they care about me, and I care about them, and sometimes when you try to play to keep someone's job, you have a tendency not to do anything. Right now, they're just playing basketball. Three weeks ago, this game probably would be a 20-point (loss). The game at Purdue (a 70-59 Indiana victory) would have been a 10-15 point loss. Right now, we're playing with peace of mind.

I never seen this coming. You know, I never seen this type of game coming, especially the kind of team we are, the kind of character we have. But, you know, you never say 'never.' They came out and they just punched us. We didn't recover from it.

I'm not sure (why we started slowly), but defensively I thought we did enough to keep us in the game. We were just not ready to shoot the basketball.

I'm not upset about it, not disappointed about it. I think they need that. I really do, because these players deserve better.

I'm hoping that the lineup change will get our mind-set going in the right direction. I haven't liked the way we've played since the Michigan game (Jan. 3). We played well defensively against Illinois and that's about it.

Not once did any student say anything to me or my staff or team. They're focused on their team. More than anything, students want to go to the middle of the floor to their team. I don't know if it's good or bad.

Secondly, as William Whyte has observed of social intercourse in New York, 'fear proves itself'. I figured it would be something bad when (the officials) called me over. Our plan was to miss the second free throw at 0.8. Make the first one, miss the second one. Since we were up two, we had to make the second free throw, because with 2.1, a lot of things can happen in that situation.
