Preseason game plans are always about fundamentals and playing football. You're not trying to out-scheme anybody, you're just trying to beat people and out-execute people. That's what's fun to me.
I was just trying to get the ball to the athletes around me.
What I'm going to be trying to do is put my team in the best situation to win and not try to make every play myself.
I think I'm part of the competition. Nothing's decided yet.
Growing up, my quarterback coach was my father. I call him every day and talk to him about it all. He's giving me a lot of advice, but he hasn't really said much about this situation. I have to prepare myself to be ready for whatever the coach calls. I'm ready to go. I just do whatever I can at practice everyday to get better.
When you come in, you kind of see all these guys who are tremendous athletes. In high school you don't see that many good athletes. I think I am going to have to work at it every day at practice and get better each day. I can't make the same mistakes twice that I made the day before.
I feel like, if the guys can look at me in the huddle and see a calm and collected face, that they're going to relax a little bit. The way I look at it, leadership and being that guy is, don't be someone you're not. Don't be a hoorah guy jumping around and clapping your hands if you're not that guy.
It's easier said than done, but that's my challenge for this week, to stay calm and not think about the big situation. You can't get all hyped up. At my position, you have to relax and focus on the game plan.
I try to have the motto of living life with no regrets.
The product is out there. It's not necessarily right, and it's not necessarily wrong. It's just the idea that was generated.
This is a major step, where we start to lay out the site and provide for the consolidation of lots.
I think there's nothing that's not important. Everything you do - from how you connect with the guys in the locker room, to how you learn, to how you play on the field - everything's important; everything goes with the position.
The input from younger people is extremely important to us. We have heard some concerns that the city of Ames isn't appropriately catering to the 18- to 25-year-old group.
I love preseason games. They are fun to me because you get to go out there with guys that are on the NFL field for the first time and playing against guys who are going to be on the field for the first time.
