If you look at films about becoming a man, coming-of-age movies are made with 12-, 16-, 40-, 50-year-olds... For a guy to feel like he's a 100 percent grown-up is almost like giving up. Like admitting that you're on your way into the grave.
Interestingly enough, (a decision of Atom's) is possibly part of the reason why we're unable to over-turn this rating because he chose to shoot it in one master,
I'm not as enamored with actors as I am with musicians, especially like these guys, ... These are some of my heroes, and to be in the same room listening to them play or to what they have to say is fun for me.
I had done 'Mystic River' and 'The Woodsman' and they were both internalized characters, characters who could hold an awful lot inside, and I thought it might be cool to go back and do something kind of external and showy, ... I also have rarely played an entertainer, and certainly have rarely played a celebrity, so to tap into those two parts of my own personality, I thought, seemed like it might be kind of interesting.

There's an addictive quality to fame and when your celebrity starts to wane, people get a real fear about that, ... And that's why I think sometimes you see people who will put themselves on whatever real weird reality shows or they'll find themselves just back in the paper by doing something horrible. They had me booked on the 'Today' show and they cancelled it because of the NC-17 rating. And I come to find out that none of the other morning shows will have me on.
All agreed that it would be wise to terminate part of the program that was being underutilized, but at least retain one of the areas. It was a good way to resolve it; Mount Carmel and the township were on the same page.
