I'm always trying to make something that is impossible to film. Why would somebody just read a novel when they can see it on TV or in the cinema? I really have to think of the things fiction can do that film can't and play to the strengths of the novel. With a novel, you can get right inside somebody's head.

These principles and positions only get you so far, because what actually happens is that you don't carefully chart your way through life. I'd spend long nights with my friends sorting out moral and political positions that we thought would take us through adult life. But for those like us, our fate is to face the world as orphans, chasing through long years the shadows of vanished parents. For a great many people, the evening is the most enjoyable part of the day. Perhaps, then, there is something to his advice that I should cease looking back so much, that I should adopt a more positive outlook and try to make the best of what remains of my day.
