Mark Martin probably said it well in terms of the drivers, ... Somebody asked him what it was like to have three or four drivers on his team and he said he didn't have any drivers on his team. He said if they were on his team, they'd be trying to help him win races.

Maybe NASCAR, behind the scenes, is trying to do the same thing, ... They brought it out just at a time when we were starting the Chase. If they wanted to cause distractions to my teams, to create anxiety among my drivers, create a question in my sponsors as to my viability ... and the prospects of Roush Racing going forward, they would do exactly what they have done.

We've probably had more conversation in the last 10 days than we've had in the last 10 years, and I don't know if that's good or bad for the rest of the competition and for what Brian and/or NASCAR would otherwise be trying to accomplish. I'm not sure what they're trying to do is legally right or is defensible in a court of law, but I want to be in this business, ... I don't want to jeopardize my sponsors and my drivers and our prospects in the near term, and too much distraction through an adjudication process would certainly not be in NASCAR's interest and would almost certainly not be in my interest and would very likely not have an outcome that I could be happy with.

I've been telling the guys that we hadn't peaked yet and if it came soon enough we might have a chance. I'd all but written off our chances to get in (the Chase) three races ago, but Robbie (Reiser, crew chief) and the guys didn't lose the faith. We've got it turned around now.

Right now we have a healthy series with Ford, Chrysler and General Motors involved. And it can be healthy with Toyota involved as well, as long as we don't wind up discouraging or rendering uncompetitive anybody else to the extent they will not be willing to make their investment for what they get.
