I'm not going to walk him to lead off an inning. I don't walk anybody leading off an inning. I don't think there is anybody in the game I would ever walk leading off an inning, or walk him with the bases loaded to save three runs.
A pitcher can be the leader among the pitchers and be there for anyone who wants to approach him. But he is not that one guy who will go to a hitter and get in his face. Sometimes you need a leader and arms of that leader on the pitching staff, bullpen and the reserves. A position player can cross the line and doesn't mind going over to talk to the pitchers. But pitchers are kind of hesitant to go over to the offensive side of it.
We didn't get him to lead off. But he's going to be there if he's succeeding and the other guys in the lineup are doing their job. Right now he's comfortable there.
He has the green light when he's up there leading off an inning. He's a good fastball pitcher. It's up to him if he wants to take a pitch.
We haven't been scoring runs. ... We haven't been getting the lead like we were able to early in the season. Tonight is a formula we used with the success we had in the first part of the season.
I'm not a doctor, ... I can't tell you how long it takes to recover from what he had. But it's kind of a little sorry to accept that somebody would say on Friday or Saturday -- four days in advance -- that, 'I can't pitch on Tuesday, but I can pitch on Friday.'
I know time is running out as far as I'm concerned.
I know this kid. He has never asked for more than one day off when he has thrown a lot. For him to say that he is hurting, he has got to be hurting.
I'm looking forward to when it counts to see how this team reacts. I think we'll handle it very well.
The big difference here is when you come out here on the field, you see people in the stands and they're usually rooting for you and they're gonna root for you,
This is kind of what I would say is an amazing streak, but the club doesn't amaze me because they showed early on that they have the desire, the heart and we hung in there in close ball games, but this has been kind of an unbelievable roll that we're on right now and who knows when it's going to end.
This is kind of strange -- an individual who's been as successful as he has and as consistent as he has in the American League has struggled this much and this long over the course of this season. I've never seen anything like it before in my days.
Not really. It wasn't that easy. I went about 0-for-23 sometime after that.
It's not a task beyond his reach. He is capable of doing that.
