Well, it's always fun, this movie, what it's done. It's just amazing to me that it's 25 years old, and how long it's lasted, and the fact that it had a good message then, it has a good message now.
I was surprised to be nominated. I didn't expect to win, but of course it would have been great. There were only three songs, and I had as good a chance as anybody else. At least the guys that did win (rap group Three 6 Mafia for the song 'It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp' from the movie 'Hustle and Flow') are from Memphis.
It's always great to perform at home in the good ol' U.S.A.
I think my life actually changed at 40. That's when you realize you can't ride the fence anymore. You either have to get on one side or the other. I think some of my best years were between 40 and 50: I got my priorities straight and life is good to me now. It's only other people who say, "God, she's 50 years old!" as if I'm over the hill. I feel like I just started.
