bottom dose gaining hitting line opening players playing reality respect special spring
It's a special spring for him. He's gaining the respect of his teammates. He's gaining the respect of players he's playing against. But the bottom line it's still spring training. So, there's the dose of reality ... that there's going to be an opening day for him and he's going to be hitting .000 and he's going to have no homers. But we do like what we're seeing.
create deal depth people situation step worked
It's a situation we can live with because we worked to create the depth we have. We have people in place to step up. We have the depth to be able to deal with things like this now.
guys time
It's a big pick-me-up. Some guys showed up big time tonight.
case choose hit pitches todd
It wasn't just a case of Todd not getting pitches to hit, that is way too simplistic. That was part of it. Sometimes, of course, they're going to choose not to pitch to him. He had pitches to hit. He just didn't hit them. He'll be the first one to tell you that.
good mixed rhythm saw step tempo terms
It was a mixed bag. It was good enough. We saw what we wanted to see in terms of length, velocity, rhythm and tempo -- so it was another step forward.
danny last situation statement
It was a situation where I think we'd try to make a statement inside, hard. I think the statement was made inside, hard. It's unfortunate he got hit. It's unfortunate Danny got splattered last night. Sometimes unfortunate things happen. We won't be intimidated by anybody.
ball bigger confidence giving opening
I want him to know that I have the confidence in him by giving him the ball opening day. I can't make a bigger statement.
afternoon ahead breaks check coming reads talked work worked
I want him to do some more work on some of the things we talked about coming up from Triple-A. He worked this afternoon with Davey on reads and breaks in the outfield. There were some things we wanted to check on and try, and tighten up for him before we went ahead and got him involved. He'll get in over the weekend.
bit expect fired fly focused last letting
They were all just fired up and letting it fly last year, which is what you expect out of young kids. Now they're a little bit more focused and not in such a hurry.
ball bigger certain coach confidence giving next opening players statement time
It's Jason's time to take the next step, and sometimes when players can't get to certain places, it's up to a coach to take them there. I want him to know going in that I've got the confidence in him to do that. By giving him the ball Opening Day, I can't make a bigger statement than that.
comfort found last matter year zone
It's a matter of fundamentals and execution. We found a comfort zone last year and we didn't panic.
accomplish kids learn meaningful past
It's a meaningful afternoon, particularly (when) the kids come out and you learn about what they have been able to accomplish in the past year.
challenge good
It will be a good challenge for us.
bullpen chance watch
It's a chance for us to see him, watch his bullpen session, say hello.
