I have a feeling a lot of the records I grew up listening to and the records I still like, as hard as musicians worked making them, I feel like they were really enjoying what they were going through. They weren't just going through the process. You can tell that with certain things that you listen to.

We've had a crazy relationship because we've always distanced ourselves from Korn so we could be our own band. Their first record came out before ours, so it was always like we were following in their footsteps. And I think we had to do that, and now it's time to just have fun. We don't care so much about that stuff anymore. We just want to play with friends.

A band like Depeche Mode would go out and record them hitting a trash can with a steel rod or something and recording it. And that would be one of their sounds of the drums. I love the creativeness of that kind of really raw sampling.

If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything, really. There were times when we really got along and I learned a lot of things from him but there were a lot of times when he's in his own world where he thinks he knows what's best and he doesn't know what's best, really. It just wasn't fun to do and it wasn't a fun record to make. The music turned out rad. It's just when you're making a record, especially when you're working on vocals, I've only worked with a couple of producers and most of the records I've done with Terry Date . The reason we chose Ezrin is because we wanted to do something different, but I learned that different isn't always good.

That was weird because we were the oldest band there. You see a lot of the younger bands, and it's just a reminder of how things are now. It was a good time, but we felt like grandparents out there sometimes.

Deftones is always my main focus. I’ve been doing it the longest and it’s definitely a priority. I think of these as projects. It’s not like I’m unfulfilled with a need to find another outlet. I look at it as making music with my friends, and I’m blessed that they’re great musicians.
fun people want
It's fun, working with different people, everybody works differently. When I have time off from music, I want to make other music. That's what I do, that's what's fun, that's what makes me happy.
