There is a lot of preparation to be done. Some are just trying to get better for the conference meet. There are five or six key things some others need to do to get ready for nationals, and that may or may not happen.

That was probably the best opening day we've had in a long while. I think this team has a chance to be the best team we've had here in a while.

I am happy with our whole team's performance. We didn't do everything we had wanted to do today, but that's OK. We have never had every one of our athletes we have brought to the national meet gain All-American before. This is going to give us some momentum heading into the outdoor season.

This was the best effort I have seen from a team since I came to UTEP. They dug down and got after it today and beat people head-on. The 3,000 really clinched the meet for us when we finished 1-2-3-4.

It really wasn't that good technically. He got a fairly good start, not a great start. He caught Dix at 80-85 yards. When he did, he just went whoosh, just right on by him. And Walter Dix is a very good sprinter. But it could have been technically a much better race. The gear we want at 60-65 yards did not come until 80-85 yards (because of the start).

There will be non-stop action. We've got good college teams and we've got some of the best high school athletes in the city. There will not be one lapse from the time we start the running events at 12 noon until we finish at 6.

I was concerned he might go pro. He certainly had offers. But he was committed to being here. I told him I would not coach him if he was not committed to training and committed to an education. And he is. And I have not seen anyone successful who was not committed and successful in the classroom, too.

I think the men's title will be between us and Houston. We just have to make sure we don't make mistakes. The way I have it scored, there might be 10 points between us. On the women's side, it should be Houston, then Rice, then us.
good sprinter
He's got at least another gear. There is a lot more to him. He is as good as any sprinter who has been here. And there have been some very good ones here.

We're opening up the year. We hope to get some marks in, maybe some that will help us for regional qualifying.
