acceptable address best bona consists deprive doubtful effort fans knows last late leadership possibly prompt proposal save september start threaten union work
The way it appears, union leadership now will make a last-minute proposal, possibly as late as September 14 or 15, and characterize it as its 'magnanimous last and best effort to save the season,' ... I am doubtful that the proposal will be a meaningful, bona fide effort to address our problems, which threaten to deprive our fans of a prompt start to the season. If the proposal consists of a repackaged 'status quo' system, it will not work - and will not be acceptable - and union leadership knows it.
certainly decision indicate league legal necessary protect stand supports whatever
At some point, I think it's important to take a stand and indicate a willingness to do whatever is necessary to protect your contractual and legal rights. The league certainly supports Washington's decision to do that here.
believe changes economics ensure falls financial league necessary offering overall providing remain required short sync
We believe the union's Dec. 9 CBA proposal, while offering necessary and significant short-term financial relief, falls well short of providing the fundamental systemic changes that are required to ensure that overall league economics remain in sync on a going-forward basis,
change facing fact hockey national pervasive problem steroids
It does nothing to change the fact that the use of steroids is not a pervasive problem facing the National Hockey League.
national perceived product regional sell united
We now have a national product we can sell in United States, ... When you're perceived as a regional sport, you can't sell national sponsorship agreements.
culture educate gambling players pro
We take this seriously. The pro gambling culture is something we educate our players about extensively.
effective problem program year
From the league's perspective, we have put into place a program this year and we think it's going to be a very effective program. Luckily, we don't have a problem with doping in our sport.
believe both clearly closer concerns craft frustrated meetings points portraying process satisfy sides suggesting trying understand work
I believe we're a lot closer to the same philosophies than they are portraying now. Were there points in those meetings when both sides were clearly frustrated and Trevor was clearly frustrated? Absolutely, and I understand that. I can only take that back and try to process that and try to find a way to satisfy the concerns he was raising. We're trying to craft something that will work for both sides. And I can tell you that I think we're a lot closer than they're suggesting we are.
arena behind certain existing far funding future leaders local pittsburgh process
Obviously, we think the process could be accelerated and the long-term future of the Penguins in Pittsburgh would be far more certain if the local leaders would get behind the existing arena funding plan.
agreement committed continue either meetings process proposals remain until
No new proposals were made by either side. While no new meetings are scheduled, we remain committed to continue working through the process until a new agreement can be reached.
approach couple current dollars economics financial immediate improve league levels losses matter offered overall percent player prevent proposal union virtually
While the immediate 'rollback' of 24 percent offered by the union would materially improve league economics for the 2004-05 season, there is virtually nothing in the union's proposal that would prevent the dollars 'saved' from being redirected right back into the player compensation system, such that the league's overall financial losses would approach current levels in only a matter of a couple of years.
progress slow
We're still working. We're making slow progress, but it's a long process.
appears bottom bryan league line positive program question substance tested totally
It's two totally different jurisdictions. The bottom line is Bryan has not tested positive as part of the program the league instituted. Bryan appears to have ingested the substance in question before the program was even in place.
attempt cap exposes fact fight motivation necessary preserve proposals salary six status true union
The fact that only one of the six proposals actually contemplated a salary cap exposes the union for its true motivation - to do everything necessary to precipitate a fight in an attempt to preserve the status quo.
