Out of compassion for them I, who dwell within their heart, destroy the darkness born of ignorance by the shining lamp of knowledge.

Restless senses, O Arjuna, forcibly carry away the mind of even a wise person striving for perfection.

Renunciation of the fruit of work is better than meditation.
achieves attains body constant leaves life object remembers whatever
Remembering whatever object one leaves the body at the end of life, one attains that object, O Arjuna, because of the constant thought of that object (one remembers that object at the end of life and achieves it).
eating living refuge taking yoga
Living in solitude, eating lightly, controlling the thought, word, and deed; ever absorbed in yoga of meditation, and taking refuge in detachment.
creatures food itself living nourished rain selfless service water worship
Living creatures are nourished by food, and food is nourished by rain; rain itself is the water of life, which comes from selfless worship and service.
mind patience repeated
Little by little, through patience and repeated effort, the mind will become stilled in the Self.
danger die duty however lacking thine though
It is better to do thine own duty, however lacking in merit, than to do that of another, even though efficiently. It is better to die doing one's own duty, for to do the duty of another is fraught with danger.
attains becomes falls peace righteous soon
Such a person soon becomes righteous and attains everlasting peace. Be aware, O Arjuna, that My devotee never falls down.
anybody depend interest
Such a person has no interest, whatsoever, in what is done or what is not done. A Self-realized person does not depend on anybody (except God) for anything.
human quickly success work
Success in work comes quickly in this human world.
absence divine qualities
Splendor, forgiveness, fortitude, cleanliness, absence of malice, and absence of pride; these are the qualities of those endowed with divine virtues, O Arjuna.
body eternal temporary vanquished

ancient duties duty liberation performed seekers
The ancient seekers of liberation also performed their duties with this understanding. Therefore, you should do your duty as the ancients did.
