invasion retreat wildlife
Wilderness is a resource which can shrink but not grow. Invasions can be arrested or modified in a manner to keep an area usable either for recreation, science or for wildlife, but the creation of new wilderness in the full sense of the word is impossible. It follows, then, that any wilderness program is a rearguard action, through which retreats are reduced to a minimum.
rivers water environmental
Hydrologists have demonstrated that the meanderings of a creek are a necessary part of the hydrologic functioning. The flood plain belongs to the river. The ecologist sees clearly that for similar reasons we can get along with less channel improvement on Round River.
jobs winter night
The government tells us we need flood control and comes to straighten the creek in our pasture. The engineer on the job tells us the creek is now able to carry off more flood water, but in the process we have lost our old willows where the owl hooted on a winter night and under which the cows switched flies in the noon shade. We lost the little marshy spot where our fringed gentians bloomed.
gone wildflowers easy
Wildflower corners are easy to maintain, but once gone, they are hard to rebuild.
art noses stolen
We stand guard over works of art, but species representing the work of aeons are stolen from under our noses
thinking eagles scream
Patriotism requires less and less of making the eagle scream, but more and more of making him think.
wildlife administration profession
Wildlife administration, in this respect, is not yet a profession.
art sanctuary firsts
Wilderness areas are first of all a series of sanctuaries for the primitive arts of wilderness travel, especially canoeing and packing.
country people riches
In country, as in people, a plain exterior often conceals hidden riches, to perceive which requires much living in and with.
land students enjoy
Teach the student to see the land, understand what he sees, and enjoy what he understands.
team men land
All ethics so far evolved rest upon a single premise: that the individual is a member of a community of interdependent parts.... That man is, in fact, only a member of a biotic team is shown by an ecological interpretation of history. Many historical events, hitherto explained solely in terms of human enterprise, were actually biotic interactions between people and land.... Is history taught in this spirit? it will be, once the concept of land as a community really penetrates our intellectual life.
lilies golden wilderness
It is part of wisdom never to revisit a wilderness, for the more golden the lily, the more certain that someone has gilded it
sky navy solidarity
Hemispheric solidarity is new among statesmen, but not among the feathered navies of the sky.
art quality conservation
Our ability to perceive quality in nature begins, as in art, with the pretty.
