We're in the process of trying to improve. We've probably got a little better feel for what we've got to work on, and the players also have a better feel for what they need to execute better.

We don't have very many skill players ... that's a big loss. We have to close ranks and keep marching.

Our players decided enough was enough. We played much better on defense, got off the field. We gave up two big plays, other than that we kept the ball in front of us. It was very exciting to see us run the football, to run it with authority.

They (had) a game to get the bugs out. A lot of teams improve the most from the first game to the second game. We're a new program, and that hurts us. We don't know how our players are going to respond in the heat of the game.

I think they doggoned whipped our butt, ... They have players who can play in this league. That quarterback (Jon Grant) played lights out. One throw he looked like a women's softball pitcher (passing underhanded) and he hit it. We have to deal with the why and be mature about it. This is where we're at.

We had to replace four coaches from last year's staff and I'm very pleased with the personnel we were able to bring in. Jeff is obviously a talented, young coach who will play a key role on our staff.

That was part of the package. The (June) draft is always a strong possibility because of his considerable baseball talents but we hope a scholarship to Stanford is a strong deterrent.

I think he's probably 80 percent better than he was last spring and 30 percent better than last fall. But he's still got some finishing touches he's got to put on his game. But that's why we practice.

When we lost Trent it looked like the wheels fell off offensively, ... I was disappointed in the blocking up front and the protection was not good. T.C. has to play better as well.

We had a couple of runs for him. It's something we had to do.
