But that's not me. I feel most alive when I'm being challenged, when there is pressure involved. I felt like I was dying as a football player. And I always felt that I've never met my potential as a football player in this league. I was hoping to get one more chance. I didn't think I would.
My focus was not letting that happen. I never hung my head. I knew I wasnt playing good, but I also knew I had a bunch of football left.
This week we're playing against a great front seven, ... a team that knows how to pressure the quarterback and overload the run game and make you run uphill.
The biggest factor today was big plays. We called some aggressive pass plays and were able to capitalize on some. Even the ones we didn't (connect on) scared the snot out of them.
Hit the ball pretty solid. Haven't played a lot of golf this year, so was really unsure of what it would be like. I've been playing pretty well lately, especially hitting the ball solid.
When you're not playing well as a quarterback, what I've learned is, you can't panic. The challenge with this football team is, when things go bad, people get frustrated. My challenge is not to let that happen.
They feel so sorry for me because I am so old that I think they are playing a little better than they normally would.
I think the history's been a lot of a burden for the organization. But I think the players just started to feel it recently. A lot of times that would be a bad thing, but I think they used it to their advantage.
His greatest impact would be just his presence, ... I believe now that Ricky Watters is gone, I'm the only guy on this roster who's won a Super Bowl. But Shannon would change that. He's won three. He knows what it takes and his daily regimen shows the commitment level that's necessary. Guys would come to view him as the most credible player to show us all how to do this thing.
But I never hung my head. I knew I wasn't playing good, but I knew there was a lot of football left.
I held out for 12 days. It was a wonderful decision financially and a horrible decision football-wise. Being completely honest with that, if I had to go back to do it all over again, I'd have sacrificed the $2 million I made to be a better football player my first couple years.
He's far superior to me when it comes to leadership, ... I can't have the kind of impact that he does on a team. And he doesn't lead with just his words. He leads with his actions far more. He plays hard and he practices hard. It's infectious.
The guy next to me is going to be best player out here when he starts doing it full time. A lot of us have been playing other sports.
There are some guys out here that can really play golf, but it has not been their focus for that long.
