character thinking black
I felt like it was a courageous show [Black-ish] from the beginning. We are a black family - we're not a family that happens to be black. But the show is not even about us being black. The show is about us being a family. That is groundbreaking - on TV, the black characters either happen to be black or they're the "black character," where everything they say is about being black. I think that's the genius.
cutting thinking choices
My generation is one of the first generations of "choiceful" women - women who have actually had the choice of how they architect their lives - and I don't think shame should have any place in that. But as that generation, you get cuts and bruises.
thinking culture shame
I think our culture promotes fear and shame.
thinking looks accepting
I hope they look at me and think, 'That lady looks like she accepts herself.'
jobs thinking people
I think television is doing a better job than films in terms of representing people, but television is still not diverse.
thinking thank-god married
Getting to a place where I am comfortable saying things was hard-earned for me. I've chewed on the ground glass of my own experience. I saw Gloria Steinem speak, and I was just like, Shut the front door. She was saying that she didn't come into her own until her 40s, and she was asking herself the question, Why should she have to get married? And I just thank God someone asked that question, right? I think we're the first generation of women asking ourselves certain questions and deciding for ourselves.
acting both certainly created creative deeply exciting experience family full hand input love playing producing rewarding shaping
The experience of both acting and producing has been wonderful. It certainly has created a full plate. But it is very exciting and rewarding to have creative input on the show. 'Reed' is about love and family and for me, playing a hand in shaping it has been deeply gratifying.
I used to think 40 was old. Now I think, 'Hey, 40's hot!'
crave days good steak
I listen to my body. Some days all I want is a good steak and others, I crave veggies and quinoa.
ball obsessed ruin
I loved being a redhead! I always wanted to try it. I was obsessed with Lucille Ball growing up. I really wanted to try it but I always thought that doing it would ruin my hair.
care fan freckles fresh general natural skin wear
It is important to me to take care of my skin. In general I don't like to wear foundation; I'm not a fan of the look. I like my skin fresh and natural enough so my freckles show through.
I am a connoisseur of products. I check out everything, I try everything.
empowered stories
I'm always touched by people's different stories of who they are and why they made the choices that they made. I feel so empowered by the story behind the person.
children
I don't know that the stereotypical idea of what it is to be a child of somebody hugely famous necessarily comes into play in my life.
