breaking collapsing die doctors figured finish mile scientists track
Doctors and scientists said that breaking the four-minute mile was impossible, that one would die in the attempt. Thus, when I got up from the track after collapsing at the finish line, I figured I was dead.

I leapt at the tape like a man taking his last spring to save himself from the chasm that threatens to engulf him.

The earth seemed to move with me. I found a new source of power and beauty, a source I never knew existed.

holiday lakes house
Our concept of a family holiday was going to a guest house in the Lake district or Wales where walking was part of the holiday.
running world arms
If I faltered, there would be no arms to hold me and the world would be a cold and forbidding place.
