backs business failures mean meaner strength survive tough year
Well first of all it's a business and it's a tough business, and you have to have the strength to survive all the set backs all the failures that make this a mean business, that's getting meaner and meaner every year in my opinion.
art hands years
Between 18 and 19 years old [in the 1950s] I came to Paris. I studied art. And that experience really did change my life. I was living hand to mouth. I walked everywhere. I thought, this city is incredible but you really have to experience it by walking it.
kids artist years
When I was a kid I was not a good student. I went to the University of Colarado, my grades were poor. I was asked to leave after a year. What I really wanted to do was to be an artist.
mean thinking years
There's a lot of hyperventilation that takes off before the [Sundance Film] Festival, a lot of buzz. Every year we hear, this is going to be the new this, this is going to be the new that, and it never is. The buzz just doesn't mean anything. I'm glad it doesn't. Because I think the festival shows that what succeeds is content.
years people conformity
I was seen in earlier years by family members and people of authority as somebody wasting his time. I had trouble with the restrictions of conformity. It made me edgy.
years festivals way
We program the festival, after 20 years, exactly the way we did on the first day.
artist years actors
When I started, I was an artist; I wanted to be an artist. I became an actor almost by accident. I acted for fifteen years and tried to produce. I looked for stories that were the story beneath the story that you thought you knew, like 'The Candidate'.
art new-york years
I had just arrived in New York from California. I was nineteen years old and excited beyond belief. I was an art student and an acting student and behaved as most young actors did - meaning that there was no such thing as a good actor, 'cause you yourself hadn't shown up yet.
believe great love
It's such a great city. I would love to come there again, believe me.
command dial event scandal sure
I'm not sure you can have an event like that anymore. When we made the film, as you can see, we had dial phones, there was no Internet, there was no cable, there was no computerization of our culture, and so one event like this -- one scandal -- could command that kind of attention.
areas bob camp children colleague friend inspired paul presenting racing speak worthy
It was never going to be The Paul and Bob Show. Instead, the idea of me presenting a friend who was also a colleague to speak about what inspired him -- his salad-dressing company, his racing interests, his camp for children -- those were areas that I thought were worthy of attention.
happened thank wondered
Oh, thank heavens, ... I wondered when that day would come. It should have happened 35 years ago.
action talk
Talk is not enough. It has to go to action and that is where we are right now.
broaden connect sundance
Sundance is about storytelling. Storytellers can broaden our minds: engage, provoke, inspire, and ultimately, connect us.
