Brian's death was a real blow. It hit home on a personal level because he was a close friend to all of us. But it hit home at a political level, too, because he was such a crucial part of the community.

We essentially ran ourselves dead broke doing it. ... We were originally thinking (of going to) Baton Rouge or Houston, but gas supplies were short, and local radio was saying that if you were going anywhere closer to the disaster, make sure you had armed yourself - to essentially have a shotgun or something of that nature in your vehicle.

Tanner got routinely left out of surveys of American art. It was really in the 1980s that people realized that you really needed to be paying attention to more than the usual artists we all grew up on.
