passports to new and exciting worlds... and I know that I would not be the person I am today had it not been for my love of reading.
It's been a secret dream of mine to be part of Broadway, ... I hope to be able to do for this production some of what I've been able to do for books - that is, to open the door to the possibilities for a world of people who have never been or even thought of going to a Broadway show.
I've decided I will open the door to all books as potential Oprah's Book Club selections, ... I feel this will give the book club a whole new range of opportunities to explore the world through words.
Like Dr. King I have a dream of my own, too, that the powerful message of this little book would be engraved on every human heart and will never be forgotten again. That you who read this book will feel as I do that these 120 pages ... should be required reading for all humanity.
I love the printed word and have always appreciated the unique connection between author and reader. This magazine provides a different way for people to be informed and inspired.
I tried documentaries. It wasn't the time for me. I was going to try to do the same thing, I did make a valiant attempt but it did not work - to do the same thing with documentaries that we had done with the book club [in 2011]. The zeitgeist wasn't ready. It just wasn't ready.
I interviewed - no - had lunch with Harper Lee several years ago, trying to convince Harper Lee to do "To Kill a Mockingbird" for the book club. She wouldn't do it. She said, "Honey, I said everything I wanted to say."
I also like some of Joel Osteen's work. I think he's now doing a book about one of my favorite sermons of his, "The Power of 'I Am.' " I just love that sermon.
I am disappointed by this controversy surrounding A Million Little Pieces because I rely on the publishers to define the category that a book falls within and also the authenticity of the work.
It has become harder and harder to find books on a monthly basis that I feel absolutely compelled to share, .. I will continue featuring books on the 'Oprah Winfrey Show' when I feel they merit my heartfelt recommendation.
Books were my pass to personal freedom.
When you educate a woman, you set her free. Had I not had books and education in Mississippi, I would have believed that's all there was.
When I didn't have friends, I had books.
Books showed me there were possibilities in life, that there were actually people like me living in a world I could not only aspire to but attain. Reading gave me hope. For me, it was the open door.
