Everywhere I go on the campaign trail, I meet voters with a real thirst for a healthy discussion of the issues. Ultimately, people don't care whether an issue comes from the left or the right. What they want to talk about are ideas that lift America up and make us better. It's what I call 'Vertical Politics'.
Politics has become unbelievably and unfortunately way too much about how much money is involved rather than what kind of ideas are involved.
Americans different in some maybe thoughts or emphasis still have the same ideas. They want a government that lets them be free, that leaves them alone, that doesn't interrupt and interfere with every aspect of their life, that lets them go to work and keep more of what they've worked hard to have.
The big problem is that the storm affected major electric transmission lines. It has destroyed the infrastructure of the state's distribution system,
The churches have filled in the gaps, especially when you consider that these folks have been dehumanized by this experience, ... It's not just a cot, food and a shower they need, it's a human touch, a hug, warmth, some level of respect.
The churches are really acting like churches, ... It has been impressive to me that when we thought about moving certain state resources and assets to an area, the local communities often beat us to the punch.
I liked gravy poured on top of a big glob of mashed potatoes, I liked biscuits a lot, and a lot of them. I liked going to the state fair and having a fried Twinkie. They were my choices. They were bad choices.
It was one of the greatest days of my whole life, ... It ranks right up there with the birth of my children and the day I was sworn in as governor.
To put it in perspective, this tornado today or this series of tornadoes will probably rank equal to all of the tornadoes that we had in the entire year last year, ... So that will give you some perspective of just what an incredible disaster this has been for our state.
We could potentially be looking at taking an enormous amount of people from Houston, ... We're going to have to prepare in the event. It would tax us if we had to, but we would do it.
Well, for me the pro-life issue has been something I've been very passionate about since the '70s, and I have been very involved in the pro-life community since long before politics.
One of the things about politics, when you're actually there, you realize, you're on a high wire and there is no net under you. On any given day, your campaign can implode for something that happens inadvertently or even intentionally.
Nobody in this country is on Social Security because they made the decision when they were starting work at 14 that they wanted to trust some of their money with the government. The government took it out of their check whether they wanted them to or not.
My kids have moved more in their twenties, you know, than my parents have moved in nearly 40-something years of marriage before they died. So there's a part of me that laments what we have lost, and that is a sense of community.
