center corner great guy happened knew opportunity outfield provided year
It just happened that we had more of a need in center field. We all knew 'X' can play. Certainly, this would have been the year that would have provided a great opportunity to play one of the corner positions. But in this outfield here, we thought it was more important to go get a guy who can play center field.
bond check diego fortunate good gut kid kids less meet quite realize san
It's good for our players, too. I think it's important to be able to give back to some of these kid that are less privileged. I think it's a gut check for them to realize how fortunate they are and what they have and be able to bond and get to meet some of the kids in San Diego who aren't quite so lucky.
eighth embark graduated high kids lead neat program ready school seen successful tremendous
It's a tremendous program. I've been here for 11 years and we've seen some of the youngsters who have come through the program and graduated college. It's very successful. It's kind of neat to see kids at this age, in the eighth grade, ready to embark into their high school years and be able to feel that the Padres have had something to do with it, which can lead to very long and successful careers.
believe best far player
I want him to keep grinding, but he hasn't done anything to make us believe he shouldn't have the job. He's been by far our best player in camp.

They were positioned in the right place. The ball Loretta hit was a good pitch that he hit hard down the line and Nunez happened to be in the right spot. Sanders happened to be in the right spot on (Dave) Roberts' ball. It was almost the identical ball that Edmonds hit and we couldn't get to.

That is one of the toughest roles there is in the game. The mentality you have to have. The pressure. The situation that you inherit. The crowds, on the road, the noise,

add depth
We're getting an experienced reliever who's pitched in the postseason and will add depth to our bullpen.
certainly few goes hopeful mark saves surprised within
We're hopeful that in 2006 he will be the all-time saves leader. It's certainly within his grasp. I won't be surprised if he surpasses the 500 mark and goes to Cooperstown as one of the few relievers there.
reflect season sit
We have to get busy. That's the thing about this job. You can't even sit back and reflect on the season you just had before you have to go to work.
hold innings rush
We're not going to rush him. We're not going to hold him back, either. But I'd like to see him get more innings at the professional level.
kidding ourselves players problem size
We're kidding ourselves if we say this problem is not happening. Look at the before and after shots, at the size of some of these players from the '90s to now. It's a joke.
complete games last love pray schedule year
We'd look at our schedule last year and pray our big games were on the road. This year it's the complete opposite. We actually love it here at home.
