We just wanted to present a better tone for 'Better Life,' and I had been down to New Orleans and was struck by a combination of things -- how much has been done and how little has been done. We just wanted to bring a little more awareness back to the cause down there.

My dad was a drummer on the weekends when he was young. Being a kid in the '50s, he got bitten by the rock 'n' roll bug like everyone else. He had a fascination with American culture and the American dream. He fell in love with the idealism.
I feel like I'm 15 and in my first garage band again, ... I don't know where that's coming from, but I love it. I find an even deeper exuberance in playing music and putting on a show. I'm just giddy about putting all this together and giving something to people that they haven't seen before.

And I went through a period where I think I came very close to God taking it away from me. Fortunately, I got through it and suddenly went 'Oh my God, this is an amazing thing.' Music is a phenomenal thing and I saw it as a blessing and not as a trick anymore, and as soon as I recognized it for that, everything started coming together.
There are certain things you want to go do together, and you want your mate to be there. But mostly you just try and, you know, pick places where you shouldn't be going because it's going to be too crazy.

You're always in a different headspace when you make each record, so hopefully they're all different. You just pick up things that you wish you hadn't done on the first one.
The records in the house I really remember were, well, Glen Campbell's 'Wichita Lineman' and 'Galveston.' Even as a kid, I knew these songs were glorious. My dad also had records by Merle Haggard, Charley Pride, Waylon Jennings, and then there was also the Eagles and Don Henley. Anything Texas, which includes Don Henley, was big.
They're mostly done before we went into the studio, although I do like writing in the studio.
This is good for all of us, ... This is good for a lot of New Yorkers that are starved for their country music.
