alone andrew biggest both considered convey difficult grievous hit honest hugo human including nowhere orleans people scope seen states storms suffering united video viewers
I've been to a lot of these hurricanes including Hugo in 1989 and Andrew in 1992, which were both considered to be some of the biggest storms to hit the United States with some of the most grievous damage, ... But I have to be honest to say I have never seen anything like this, that the scope of the human suffering here in New Orleans is difficult to comprehend, let alone try to convey to viewers through video and through storytelling. There are so many people here who have nothing, who have nowhere to go and are not being helped.
apply articulate case cases court people policies policy protected views
The right that was protected in the assisted-suicide case was the right of the people through their legislatures to articulate their own views on the policies that should apply in those cases of terminating life, and not to have the court interfering in those policy decisions, ... That's an important right.
far hear suspect view
Did I hear that it's not constitutionally suspect as far as you view it today? Yes.

You do want to understand and appreciate the views of the loved ones,
advocacy beliefs personal respect role views
there's no role for advocacy with respect to personal beliefs or views on the part of a judge.
agreement approach area cases court draw gets likely line particular perfectly practical pragmatic precedent rather tend views willing
I tend to take a more practical and pragmatic approach to things, rather than a theoretical or ideological approach, ... But I do think when it gets into an area where the correctness or incorrectness or my agreement or disagreement with a particular precedent is in an area that is likely to come before the court or could well come before the court, I do have to draw the line there. ... My views on the cases that I think are not likely to come before the court, I'm perfectly willing to discuss.
admire although attorney became court jackson job justice member people reason recognized strong supreme views
One reason people admire justice Jackson so much is that although he had strong views as attorney general, he recognized when he became a member of the Supreme Court that his job had changed, and he was not the president's lawyer,
almost along aside court decisions extent focused fortunate judges mission past political rule serve shape ties views
I have been fortunate for the past two years to serve on a court in which all of the judges ... put aside those (political) ties and those views and become judges all focused on the same mission of vindicating the rule of law. And if you look at the decisions of the D.C. Circuit, you'll see that we're almost always unanimous. We almost always come out the same way and to the extent there are disagreements, they don't shape up along political lines,
citizenship daughter equal insist married notion outside raised rights sisters three totally turn view whom work
The notion that that was my view is totally inconsistent and rebutted by my life. I married a lawyer. I was raised with three sisters who work outside the home. I have a daughter for whom I will insist at every turn that she has equal citizenship rights with her brother.
evidence hold markets people points range rates stronger view week
We have had a bearish week in U.S. markets and people who had thought the range in rates would hold are now re-evaluating that view as the evidence points to a stronger U.S. economy.
couple gay views
I'm not sure that it's right to view this as excluding a particular group. When the institution of marriage developed historically, people didn't get around and say, 'Let's have this institution, but let's keep out homosexuals.' The institution developed to serve purposes that, by their nature, didn't include homosexual couples.
thinking views law
I think judicial temperament is a willingness to step back from your own committed views of the correct jurisprudential approach and evaluate those views in terms of your role as a judge. It's the difference between being a judge and being a law professor.
aside discharge obligation personal practice views
My practice has not been ideological in any sense. And what I've been able to do is set aside any personal views and discharge the professional obligation of an advocate.

I don't think using opinion-writing assignments as a way to try to promote a particular view or agenda is a good idea,
