Ruben has had some numbers against Lackey, but we had to weigh all of the information. We decided that the defensive part of it carried it.
When you're down to 20 games left, it's hugely important. Knowing we still have control of things with the last three games against these guys, we just have to work very hard between now and then so those games will be significant.
That stuff is over and done with. They played very well against us and they played very well against other teams, too.
They get men on base, they can run, and if you look at the formula, it's the same thing that Minnesota and the Angels have used to win ballgames. I don't see a soft spot; if you're ever going to get them, it's going to be their pitching, and we haven't had success against their pitching.
They get men on base, they can run, ... And if you look at the formula, it's the same that Minnesota has used to win ballgames, and the Angels have used. They play good defense. Their outfielders overlap. If you're ever going to get them, it's going to be their pitching, and we haven't had success against their pitching. ... Are they in our heads? How can I say no, when you haven't had success against certain pitchers and you face them?
The most enjoyment I had was doing it in the second inning after the first inning. They came back with two runs, and what looked nice at 5-0 was all of a sudden 5-2. I like the fact that we're swinging the bats, because we haven't done that very well against this club.
I talked to him again today, and he's on board with that. This time of year, you like to go with as much experience as possible.
He's cool. He's having a good time. He just really told people a lot more with this last start than we learned since he came over from Colorado. Obviously, we needed every bit of it. Now we can reunite with Moose again because we haven't seen him in about five days.
He hasn't been an All-American out. Flaherty hit a very important sacrifice fly the other day against (Tim) Wakefield. His batting average doesn't show it, but he's still able to do some things for us.
I'm not sure what is the bigger surprise, the fact that he's pitching again or the fact he went down in the first place.
If you're ever going to get them, it's going to be their pitching. But we really haven't had success against their pitching.
Instead of questioning the period, they're going to question the player for the whole time, and I don't think that's fair. Because he was a heck of a player as a skinny kid. He hit a lot of home runs against me. I would walk him intentionally even then, so that kind of respect was earned at that point in time.
I'm not saying he won't be the DH, but I think it's doubtful. We'll look tomorrow and decide what our options are against Byrd and go from there.
