area good gray mentally proof question reason road took
The proof is always in the pudding. There's no question that as a two-year-old he was a good miler and beyond, and the road we took with him was the road to the Breeders' Cup, and that was one-turn races. There was no reason to try anything else. With a young horse, though, there's always that gray area if they can go that far, mentally or physically.
again answered bothered chasing good horse last might mile question quite relaxed speed start today whether year
I thought he answered a big question today about whether he could go a mile and one-eighth and it might give some of his doubters a little more faith. He's been chasing speed for the last year and today he relaxed quite a bit, then had to start going again when bothered in the stretch, which is a good sign. I thought he showed a lot of courage, especially for a horse making his first start around two turns.
chose cup reason road
We chose that road to the Breeders' Cup because it was around one turn. There was no reason to try anything else.
easy edgar gate looking pop work
It was what we were looking for. Just an easy work to let Edgar get a feel for him. I wanted to let him pop out of the gate and just take it easy from there. Nothing too hard.
both fence inquiry sides today tough
I've been on both sides of the fence when the inquiry comes. It's a tough loss. But today was our day.
derby plan sure
Things just didn't go well for him today. I'm sure we'll go to Plan B, which would probably be off the Derby trail.
finished happy
I was very happy with the way he finished up. He galloped out strong, which is the important thing.
both fence good horse inquiry ran sides tough
I thought my horse ran a very good race. He showed a lot of courage. I've been on both sides of that fence when the inquiry comes. It's a tough loss, but it was our day.
both courage fun good horse race ran sides turns
I thought my horse ran a very good horse. He showed a lot of courage. He was impeded a little bit. He's never been at two turns before. He was a one-turn horse. It was a very good race and we got him to relax. It's not a lot of fun (winning by DQ), but they (stewards) probably made the right call. I've been on both sides of the call.
bench came fast good horse last missed race ran sharp since start worked
I thought he worked well. I think he came out of his last race as good as a horse could come out of a race like that, especially considering it was his first start off the bench and they ran fast over a fast racetrack. He hasn't missed an oat and has been very sharp since the race.
gets good
He's about as good as it gets for 2-year-olds.
good happy
You know, we're in it to win. But I thought (First Samurai) did everything right, about as good as he could do, other than win. I was very happy with the race.
breaks hold jock
I'd like to see him just off the pace. But if he breaks running, I wouldn't want the jock to take hold of him.
coming good horse ran satisfied sharp
I was satisfied with the way my horse ran coming off the bench. He was good and sharp ... he just couldn't get to the other horse.
