Fatherhood brings so much perspective to your life. You realize that what we do is just hit a ball over a net and where that sits in the scheme of things, as important as it is to us.
I couldn't really hit balls for a month at least due to my ankle. You come back, try to get ready in a hurry and you force it and things just don't respond if you try to do it too soon.
I was pleased with the way I improved over the course of the match, ... By the end of the match, I was much more comfortable. But I was a little nervous in the beginning and the ball was really flying. I was trying to go after the ball so it didn't play me, but I wasn't quite committed to letting my swing go, so I was sort of moving forward and not finishing my swing, and I was losing control of a few shots.
I felt I needed a good break after Wimbledon. I was mentally and physically exhausted and frustrated. I've come back to practice with a much greater purpose, the way I'm hitting the ball has made me excited. It may not happen this week, next or at the Open, but I know I'm good enough for what I want to do to pay dividends somewhere down the line.
That'll be a tough match, ... These are tough conditions ? quick courts, wind. He's a quick-court player. He uses the pace really well and moves the ball around. I'll have my hands full.
The ball never came in my range today. I didn't play badly but it certainly wasn't good enough. I needed to settle down, but as soon as I tried to get a rally going, he would take his chances and hit some good passing shots. You've got to credit him with that.
It was blown up like a balloon and twice the size,
The court was playing pretty fast, it almost felt like playing tennis with golf balls out there. But I am feeling fine physically. I think need a few more matches before I can start competing better.
Unfortunately, it doesn't happen as often as you'd like. Two guys need to play well and then the balls need to fall at the right place at the right time to create that sort of drama, and it all came together tonight.
Hitting a ball dead perfect - the only peace.
He was controlling the ball and controlling the pace. I pretty much got what I deserved.
He was out-hitting me. I wasn't reacting well to the ball. He hits a heavy ball and a big forehand return.
He was really hitting the ball clean and big and making me feel like I was a step behind on all of my shots, ... ... It was quality tennis and the tennis stayed pretty high throughout.
He's unique to the game based on his size and the way he plays. I don't know what it's like to face it. It's an odd trajectory that the ball is coming down from. It's not even so much the pace, it's the trajectory as well.
